My mentor, Tara has a very busy schedule. She is an early childhood intervention specialists and works with a lot of kids that have some kind of disorder. She does a lot of "one on one" work with the children. It's not exactly like she's alone working with the kid, but usually there's a parent with the kid as she works with the kids. She works with mostly 3, 4, and 5 year old kids, so these children are very young. Because of the disorders these kids may have, it makes it hard for them to learn in a classroom environment in like at a regular school in preschool or kindergarten. Which is why they just work with Tara. She helps them learn the things they would in preschool and kindergarten in a more comfortable and one on one environment. She helps teach kids how to answer simple questions and do things like arts and crafts and play games. Teaching kids is not the only thing she does. She also does evaluations of children to help determine if the child may have a disorder and to see if they qualify to get help from the school district. One of the days I was with her, she went to two different family's homes. And that's typically what a lot of her day consists of. Half of the time she is working one on one with kids, and the other half of the time she is at a school teaching a class which I will get to see tomorrow. I've noticed that her job requires a lot of driving around because of all the different homes and places she needs to drive to. And it definitely requires being able to work with kids well. She works a lot with kids and it is the main part of her job. But it always requires communication skills when you talk with the parents and ask them questions and help answer their questions.
