Going off of my last blog, I talked about the little boy and how I got to witness an evaluation. Usually there are more than one person who does an evaluation of a child, and this was an example of that. My mentor was actually the last person to do an evaluation, and once that was done they were finally able to have the final meeting for that child. Pretty much the parents came into a school to meet with my mentor and another person. They pulled up a giant document on the screen and brought up notes about the child and talked about the child. The main point of this meeting is to go over all the evaluations to understand the conditions of the child and come up with strategies to help the child have the best education experience and to develop. It is important for the early childhood intervention specialists to work together with the parents to help their child succeed. The child comes first before anything, so it's important for the early childhood intervention specialists and the parents to work together well. In the meeting, they talk about the observations made by the evaluations, and they talk about ways that can help the child for each observation. For example, if in the notes someone observed that it can be difficult to understand the child sometimes, the early childhood intervention specialists may suggest taking the child to a speech therapist to help the child's speech. They may also recommend a speech therapist that is good. Usually these things are free and are payed by the school district which is where some tax dollars go to. So when we pay taxes, some of it goes to the school district to help the education system and also help children with disabilities. Children that legally have special needs have the right to receive free and appropriate education.
